What paper mailers are
A paper mailer is a flat envelope made from paper rather than plastic. It does the same job as a poly mailer — a light, flat package for soft goods — in a material that goes into a normal paper recycling stream and prints without a plastic feel.
It suits brands that have moved away from plastic, and it is common for apparel, books and flat goods. The trade-off is water: paper does not shrug off rain the way film does.
The formats
- Flat paper mailers — a single paper envelope, for flat goods.
- Padded paper mailers — a paper outer with a paper or honeycomb lining, for anything needing cushioning.
- Self-seal mailers — a peel-and-stick strip, or a plain lip closed with tape.
- Printed mailers — full-surface printing in one or more colors.
- Compostable mailers — paper with a compostable lining, where the whole pack has to break down.
Materials and finishes
Paper mailers are usually kraft or white paper, with a weight chosen for the load. On a padded mailer the lining does the protecting and the outer paper carries the print.
Finishes are matte as standard, printed flexographically. Where the load is heavy or the contents are fragile, a padded mailer or a rigid box is the safer choice.

Questions
- What is the minimum order for custom paper mailers?
- 500 units. Guru sources every job at a 500-unit minimum.
- Can paper mailers be recycled?
- Yes — the paper outer goes into a normal paper stream. On a padded mailer, check whether the lining separates from the paper first.
- Are they waterproof?
- No. Paper is not water-resistant. If the contents have to stay dry, a poly mailer or a lined mailer is the better choice.
- Can they be printed?
- Yes, flexographically in one or more colors across the whole surface.
- Are they strong enough for shipping?
- For flat, soft goods, yes. For anything with edges or weight, use a padded mailer.
