Kraft is unbleached paperboard — the brown, natural-finish board most people picture when they think of a cardboard box. A kraft box is a folding carton or a corrugated box made from it, printed on the natural surface or left plain.

The appeal is the look. Kraft reads as honest and recyclable without any green messaging printed on it, which is why it is common for food, cosmetics, subscription boxes and brands whose identity is built on natural materials.

• Folding cartons — folded from a single sheet of kraft board; ship flat, assemble on the line.
• Corrugated kraft boxes — a fluted core between two kraft liners, for shipping and strength.
• Rigid kraft-look boxes — a board-core box wrapped in kraft paper, for a premium finish.
• Die-cut and windowed — a cut window with a film patch, so the product shows through.
• Sleeves and trays — a kraft sleeve over a tray, common for food and gifting.

Kraft board comes in a range of weights and in two grades. Recycled kraft is darker and more mottled; virgin kraft is more consistent, which matters when you are printing fine detail or a strong color.

Printing on kraft is not the same as printing on white: the brown base shifts every color, so artwork is usually designed for the surface rather than printed over it. The common finishes are a single-color print, a white underlay for brighter color, or no print at all. Where a smoother surface is needed, a rigid box or a white carton is the alternative.
