What bakery boxes are

A bakery box is a food-safe box for cakes, pastries, doughnuts and bread. It has to do three things at once: protect a fragile product, keep it food-safe, and show it off — which is why so many bakery boxes have a window.

It is used by bakeries, cafés and food brands, and it is one of the few packaging types where the customer often sees the box before the product.

The formats

  • Windowed boxes — a cut window with a film patch, so the product shows.
  • Cake boxes — square or rectangular, with a lift-off lid or a tuck top.
  • Pastry and doughnut boxes — flat, with a divider or an insert.
  • Gable boxes — a carry-handle box, common for multiple items.
  • Kraft food boxes — a natural finish for artisan and takeaway use.

Materials and finishes

Bakery boxes are folding cartons in food-grade board, printed in one or more colors. The board has to be food-safe, and any window film has to be food-grade too.

Kraft is the common finish for artisan bakeries; white board gives a cleaner surface for full-color print. Where the product is heavy or the box has to ship, a food box with a stronger board is the safer choice.

Questions

What is the minimum order for custom bakery boxes?
500 units. Guru sources every job at a 500-unit minimum.
Are bakery boxes food-safe?
Yes. The board and any window film are food-grade, and the plant will confirm the specification for anything that touches the product directly.
Can we have a window in the box?
Yes — a die-cut window with a food-grade film patch. It is the most common way to show a bakery product.
Can the boxes be printed?
Yes, in one or more colors. Kraft is usually printed in a single color; white board takes full color.
Do you do grease-resistant board?
Yes. Tell us what the product is and the plant will specify a board with the right grease resistance.
