What food boxes are
A food box is packaging built for food — takeout containers, clamshells, trays and cartons that hold something that will be eaten. The defining requirement is food safety: the board, the coating and any film have to be approved for contact with food.
It is used by restaurants, food producers and grocery brands, and it covers everything from a pizza box to a windowed pastry carton.
The formats
- Clamshells — a hinged container, common for takeout and produce.
- Trays and sleeves — a tray with a printed sleeve, for retail food.
- Takeout cartons — a folded carton with a carry handle.
- Windowed cartons — a cut window showing the product.
- Grease-resistant boxes — coated board for hot or oily food.
Materials and finishes
Food boxes are folding cartons or molded pulp, in food-grade board with a coating chosen for the product — grease-resistant for hot food, moisture-resistant for chilled. Compostable and recyclable boards are available where the brand needs them.
Printing is flexographic or lithographic, in one or more colors. Where the product is a bakery item, a bakery box with a window is the more specific choice.
