What paper bags are
A paper bag is a carry bag made from paper, usually with twisted paper or rope handles. It is the bag a customer leaves the shop with, which makes it the most-seen piece of packaging a retail brand owns.
It is used by retail stores, events, takeaway food and gifting. The plain kraft bag is the default; a printed bag is the cheapest way to put a brand in a customer's hand on the street.
The formats
- Twisted-handle bags — the standard retail bag.
- Flat and die-cut handle bags — a cheaper bag with a cut handle.
- Rope-handle bags — a premium finish, usually on a heavier stock.
- Laminated bags — a coated finish for a stronger print and some water resistance.
- Luxury bags — heavy stock, often with ribbon handles and a matte or soft-touch finish.
Materials and finishes
Paper bags run from lightweight kraft to heavy laminated stock. The weight is chosen for the load — a heavier bag holds more and keeps its shape longer. Handles are twisted paper, flat paper, rope or ribbon.
