What gift boxes are
A gift box is packaging built for the moment of opening. Where a shipping box protects, a gift box presents — it is the part the customer keeps, and often the reason a product gets photographed and posted.
It is used for cosmetics, confectionery, corporate gifts and subscription sets, and it usually pairs with an insert that holds the contents in place.
The formats
- Rigid lidded boxes — the classic two-piece gift box.
- Magnetic closure boxes — a rigid box with a magnetic flap. The most common premium gift format.
- Drawer boxes — an inner tray that slides out of a sleeve.
- Folding gift boxes — a folding carton with a decorative finish, cheaper than rigid.
- Kraft and printed boxes — for a natural or a fully branded look.
Materials and finishes
The core is grayboard or folding board, wrapped in printed paper or fabric. Interiors are lined in paper, satin or foam, and often carry a die-cut insert sized to the product.
Finishes are the point of a gift box: soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, embossing, spot UV, ribbon pulls and magnetic closures. A plain kraft gift box is the other end of the range, and often the right one for a natural brand.
